NEVI funding requires more than hardware. Use this checklist to align design, procurement, and operations so your site meets program requirements and stays reliable.

Connectors & power

  • Confirm required connector types (include J3400 during the transition) and per‑port power levels.
  • Design for simultaneous charging at the posted kW rating.
  • Choose dispensers with swappable cable whips for future standards.

Payments & access

  • Support open payments (e.g., card reader) alongside account‑based options.
  • Publish transparent pricing by kWh where permitted.
  • Provide clear wayfinding and on‑unit instructions.

Real‑world reliability comes from good siting, cable reach, and simple payment flow.

Uptime & maintenance

  • Commit to proactive O&M (spares, SLAs, and remote monitoring).
  • Specify clear fault‑response times and escalation paths.
  • Track session and outage data to support reporting requirements.

Accessibility & layout

  • Provide accessible parking, cable reach, and unobstructed routes.
  • Use lighting, bollards, and signage that improve safety and visibility.
  • Coordinate with local AHJs on striping, curb ramps, and signage.

Procurement & interoperability

  • Require standards support (e.g., OCPP) and remote diagnostics in RFPs.
  • Ask vendors for field uptime data and references—not just lab specs.
  • Plan spare conduits and capacity for future cabinets.
Tip: Bring your utility in early with a load letter and a realistic timeline; upstream upgrades can be the longest lead item.
